Thermofleece Insulation

thermafleece insulation

Thermafleece insulation is a highly efficient natural insulation material made from sheep’s wool. It is naturally breathable and ideal for loft insulation and soundproofing. At Alian Energy, we stock energy saving Thermafleece insulation batts in a variety of sizes and in thicknesses ranging from 50 to 100mm.

Thermafleece insulation – why wool is best

Thermafleece insulation is the insulation material of choice for those seeking outstanding performance with minimal impact on the environment. It is healthy to use, healthy to live with and kind to the planet.

Made from wool, Thermafleece insulation is a natural fibre from a fully renewable resource so it yields an ideal energy balance over its lifetime. It is entirely harmless and can be installed without gloves or protective clothing. It is not irritating to the skin, eyes or respiratory tract and causes no discomfort to workers during installation.

Thermafleece insulation is recognised as one of the country’s leading brands of natural thermal insulation. In addition to providing first class thermal performance, Thermafleece insulation displays excellent acoustic properties.

Thermafleece insulation complies with all current fire regulations and can be used on its own or to bring existing loft insulation up to recommended levels. The necessary fire resistance and insect proofing rating is achieved by the inclusion of naturally derived additives.

Thermafleece insulation – warm in winter; cool in summer

Unlike conventional loft insulation materials, Thermafleece insulation releases moisture when it gets warm. This has a cooling effect on the natural wool fibres which, in turn, reduces heat flow into the building. This can reduce peak temperature by up to 7°C when compared to buildings in which alternative forms of loft insulation are installed.

In winter, on the other hand, Thermafleece insulation will absorb a certain amount of atmospheric moisture, which generates heat and helps to increase peak temperatures by up to 4°C when compared to conventional forms of insulation.

Thermafleece is therefore a dynamic and adaptable insulation material that offers year-round comfort while minimising the energy load on a building’s heating and cooling systems.

Exceptional Condensation Control

Thermafleece insulation is naturally breathable and, being hygroscopic, will absorb and release water vapour without compromising its thermal efficiency. By allowing water vapour to migrate through the structure it will prevent a damaging build-up of moisture so it is ideal for use in roofs and timber framed walls.

In this type of construction, Thermafleece is the perfect partner for a vapour-permeable breather membrane, which is used on the cold side of the thermal insulation to prevent the ingress of cold air and wind-driven rain and dirt. (It is necessary to protect insulation from dirt and debris in order to maintain optimum performance.) Heat loss by convection is also substantially reduced because the membrane prevents air movement across the surface of the Thermafleece insulation.

Offering exceptional performance and an environmentally sustainable alternative to conventional products, Thermafleece is ideal for use in both new-build and refurbishment projects and can be used in a wide variety of roof, wall and floor constructions.

Why Thermafleece Insulation?

Insulating a property will significantly reduce heat loss and energy bills. By reducing this wastage, less energy is consumed and less carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere. However, the choice of insulation material itself can also contribute towards a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Since natural materials such as Thermafleece insulation require much less energy in their production, they are more sustainable and the obvious choice for the environmentally conscious.

The cleaning, air-laying and thermal bonding processing during the manufacture of Thermafleece insulation consumes minimal energy. Thermafleece uses only 14% of the embodied energy that is used to manufacture glass fibre insulation, so its manufacturing energy cost is paid back seven times faster.

Moreover, Thermafleece insulation is extremely durable, with a life expectancy similar to that of most buildings, so it should not need to be replaced and should offer many years of efficient thermal performance. However, should refurbishment or demolition require the Thermafleece insulation to be removed, it can be recycled for other environmentally friendly applications. Thermafleece contains no permethrin, pyrethroids, pesticides or formaldehydes.

Technical specifications

Sizes:
Thermafleece insulation is manufactured in batts of 1200mm in length, either 400mm or 600mm wide. Three thicknesses are available - 50mm, 75mm and 100mm - enabling any overall insulation depth to be achieved by combining different layers. Thermafleece insulation is sold in packs - 50mm thick covers 20.16m2; 75mm thick covers 12.96m2; and 100mm thick covers 10.08m2.

Thermal properties:
Thermafleece insulation is manufactured to a density of 25kg/m3, giving an impressive K-value of 0.039 W/m.K. This compares favourably with that of other fibrous insulants.

Fire resistance:
Wool has a higher fire resistance than cellulose and cellular plastic insulants; it does not burn but rather melts away from an ignition source and extinguishes itself. Thermafleece insulation is treated with a natural fire-proofing agent to improve its intrinsic fire resistance and comply with BS5803-4 (Spread of Fire) achieving results of zero for ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved.

To calculate your requirements, all you need to know is the area that needs to be insulated and what thickness of insulation you want to install.

Example:
An average terraced house with a loft space of 5m x 12m = 60m2
@ Insulation thickness of 50mm     60m2 = 3 packs            £338.26
@ Insulation thickness of 75mm     60m2 = 5 packs            £542.15
@ Insulation thickness of 100mm   60m2 x 6 packs            £675.12

The current government recommendation for Thermafleece insulation is 250mm for loft insulation but this can be carried out in phases as budgets allow.

At present, we don’t sell Thermafleece insulation in part packs but we do occasionally have some part packs left over from installations. If you only need a small quantity, we may be able to help so please get in touch.

Alian Energy now offers an installation service for loft insulation so please call us or email to request a survey.
